News Article: Asbestos triggers mesothelioma more often in men than women

According to an Australian study, men are more likely than women to develop malignant mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos.

As reported in the medical journal Chest, the study was conducted with people exposed to asbestos in the Western Australian mining town of Wittenoom. Results of the study showed that deaths rates from mesothelioma were consistently lower for women than for men. Men were four times as likely to contract mesothelioma.

The research also showed that people who were exposed to asbestos at a younger age were less likely to die from mesothelioma.

News Article: Alfacell’s Mesothelioma drug granted orphan status

Onconase, a mesothelioma drug from Alfacell Corp. has been granted orphan status, which grants Alfacell seven years of marketing exclusivity. Onconase, which is intended to treat malignant mesothelioma, still needs to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
